Secret Design Studio
Secret Design Studio is a small, boutique building and interior design studio that specialises in retro homes of the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s.
I have always been curious about the livability of the apartments in Le Corbusier’s 1952 Unité d'Habitation buildings in Marseille, France. This groundbreaking building has influenced many other buildings since then. This video shows one of the larger, unrenovated apartments, which is over two levels. There are still relevant lessons here for contemporary Australia, which is looking for solutions to our current housing crisis.![]()

Part of the original building has been adapted for re-use as a hotel called Hotel Le Corbusier. As with any adaptive re-use of a heritage building, there are always compromises. While the hotel remains a destination for architectural tourists, it doesn’t appear to meet the 21st-century standards of the general public, who complain of small rooms, outdated décor, and high prices.
