Secret Design Studio
Secret Design Studio is a small, boutique building and interior design studio that specialises in retro homes of the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s.
I had the privilege of visiting this modestly scaled and beautifully detailed mid-century home the other day for one of my last Dr Retro House Calls in-home consultations for 2024. Built in 1959 by a Dutch bricklayer for his family, it is largely original and has been cherished by its current custodians for quite a long time.![]()

The stand-out feature for me was the beautiful curved, steel-framed windows for the front-facing living room and kitchen. This style of window is no longer made today. One of the corner windows developed a crack after one of Melbourne’s rare earthquakes a few years ago and had to be replaced at a cost of $1700 with thicker glass. Needless to say, the current owners are NOT planning to sell in the foreseeable future.![]()
